WEBINAR

EVOLTREE Online seminar series on "New technologies for evolution & genetics" November 2023 - Prof Cavender-Bares and Dr Hernández-Leal

Spectral phylogeography and phylogenetics: Using foliar spectral signatures to decipher micro- and macroevolutionary processes in plants
22/11/23 - 22/11/2023

A new webinar series on " New technologies for evolution & genetics" will take place in November 2023. The dates are: 8, 15, 22, and 29 November 2023 all on Wednesday 16:30-18:00 CET

The third webinar of the series will be presented by Prof Cavender-Bares and Dr Hernández-Leal on 22 November 2023, 16:30-18.00 CET

Title: "Phenotypes in phylogeography and phylogenetics: using foliar spectral signatures to understand diversification in plants"

Programme

  • Prof Cavender-Bares is distinguished McKnight University Professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior; Fellow at the Institute on Environment, University of Minnesota, USA. Her work focuses on the physiological and evolutionary dimensions of plant ecology that influence community assembly and ecosystem function. She is particularly interested in the genetic and evolutionary basis of variation in plant phenotypes and spectral properties that can advance remote sensing of biodiversity, particularly detecting change through time and its consequences for ecosystems. She is committed to advancing international efforts for global monitoring and assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services to aid management efforts towards sustainability. She is the Vice President for Finance of the Ecological Society of America and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

  • Dr Hernández-Leal is a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Minnesota. Her research focuses on the genetic diversity and evolutionary response of riparian and wetland plants to environmental change. She is interested in how environment and landscape features affect gene flow and population genetic structure in these dynamic ecosystems. She uses molecular biology and physiological tools to probe these processes.
